3.2.3 Intercultural skills for teachers

The Recommendations on April 23rd 2008, it is explained what the word competence means. As Duccio Demetrio suggests, social skills transform the traditional teacher into an “intercultural mediator”, that is, to say an educational character who is able to go beyond mutual differences. Teachers need to pay attention to the following aspects:

  • Points of view;
  • lifestyles;
  • Wishes  and feelings.

The teaching style is based on listening, looking after, participated in interaction and communicative mediation. Teachers have to look after children and they take care of their world by supporting and encouraging them.  If supported by teachers, children will become autonomous and motivated (Indicazioni Nazionali per il Curricolo, 2012).
