2.1 How children learn what to expect and what not to require
2.1.1 Introduction

There is a long and beautiful road from the new-born baby to the emotionally stable and fulfilled adult who holds a healthy perspective of the world surrounding him. This road is paved with the attention and guidance of adults surrounding the child. There is no universal recipe, as every child is different. What can parents do? Firstly, accept that we can do wrong in our relationship with the child as much as we can repair; nothing is irreparable. We should relate with children as we relate to adults; construct an honest relationship with no lies or threats. We should offer children the opportunity to make their own decisions, from those we select for them, we should set clear boundaries and respect them. We should encourage children experiment and form their own personal independence.
