Tale summary
The story of Mount Găina says that, once upon a time, there was an enchanted hen living at the top of the mountain. She would come to the village at the foot of the mountain, in the form of a fairy, and bless newly married couples. She would also give them a golden egg, for prosperity and long life, then she would fly back to her nest, this time in her bird form. The villagers praised the enchanted hen and they were very devoted to her. Everything was perfect until a thoughtless thief, aided by the devil, stole the golden eggs from the nest. The hen, saddened by the terrible deed, flew away from that place, never to return. The villagers cried and begged for her to return, but she never did, even though the thief is said to have fallen from a cliff, along with the golden eggs. The mountain and its surroundings have never been the same since then.
